Upper East Side Duplex

New York, NY

A choppy prewar Park Avenue apartment was reorganized into a cohesive duplex apartment balancing traditional elements of the past with a clean modern design.

Opportunity arose for this young family to expand their home when the un-renovated apartment above them came up for sale. Their current apartment was already a patchwork combination of two apartments and with the addition of the apartment upstairs it was time to reorganize the space. The architectural objectives included the location and design of a both a foyer and stair to gracefully connected the two floors, developing a clean division between informal and formal spaces. Working alongside the interior designer and other consultants the apartment was designed to respect the traditional detailing typical of pre-war apartments but to balance this with modern materials, cabinetry and an open plan to reflect the needs of the family.
